I am having a really hard time finishing this book I honestly think I am going to DNF (did not finish) this book. I am about 100 pages to the end and I just lost all interest. I must have missed the dark fantasy warning on this book because I was not prepared for the spicy part of this book. I did read all the trigger warning and the note from the author at the beginning. Don't get me wrong I understand what dark romance is, I have read them but this just wasn't done right it made me feel grossed out.
There is so much wrong with this book. For one, the good and evil is way overdone. Mendax is of course the villain and for the most part an ill burn the world down for her. But he is just bad there is no other characteristics he offers. And don't get me started on Eli. He goes from best friend to want to be lover. He is suppose to be the good guy but his family is horrible, and he's so clueless about it (or at least that what I read). He flip-flops from friend to want to be lover so often it's like he has no backbone but his one consistent is he hates Mendax. It makes for a really weird love triangle that is more cringe than anything.
Two there is not enough world building and it is so disappointing. There is the Seelie court, the good court and the Unseelie court, the bad court. The Seelie is sunny and colorful and the Unseelie is dark and dull again with the good and evil. That is almost the extent of the world building. There is a part of the book where Caly goes into this hole in the ground to save Eli's sister and a bear or something. There is no explanation on how these are made or why it happened it just does. Then the hole closes and that's why she had to save them. Like What???
I hated the flash backs. I hated the back story about both moms and the weird power hungry love triangle. I feel like the background could have been given differently and been way better. And the characters came out of no where and there names were so close I kept having to read back to remember who she was talking about.
This book had the potential to be SO good. There were good aspect of this book it just was not done right. I really wanted to know about what she was and how getting her heart was going to be so much better. Getting her heart back gave her powers but what powers and how come she's not actively searching for it? It drove me nuts. There were plot holes, inconsistent characters, and a lack of world building; I will not continue this series.
